A builder that generates an ArgsParser from a class

Overview

Dart CI Pub package

Parse command line arguments directly into an annotation class using the Dart Build System.

Example

Annotate a class with @CliOptions() from package:build_cli_annotations.

import 'package:build_cli_annotations/build_cli_annotations.dart';

part 'example.g.dart';

@CliOptions()
class Options {
  @CliOption(abbr: 'n', help: 'Required. The name to use in the greeting.')
  final String name;

  final bool nameWasParsed;

  late bool yell;

  @CliOption(defaultsTo: Language.en, abbr: 'l')
  late Language displayLanguage;

  @CliOption(negatable: false, help: 'Prints usage information.')
  late bool help;

  Options(this.name, {this.nameWasParsed = false});
}

enum Language { en, es }

Configure and run the Dart Build System and a set of helpers is created to parse the corresponding command line arguments and populate your class.

void main(List<String> args) {
  var options = parseOptions(args);
  if (!options.nameWasParsed) {
    throw new ArgumentError('You must set `name`.');
  }
  print(options.name);
}

Setup

Add three packages to pubspec.yaml:

dependencies:
  build_cli_annotations: ^1.0.0

dev_dependencies:
  build_cli: ^1.0.0
  build_runner: ^1.0.0
  • build_cli_annotations is a separate package containing the annotations you add to classes and members to tell build_cli what to do.
    • If the code you're annotating is in a published directory – lib, bin – put it in the dependencies section.
  • build_cli contains the logic to generate the code.
    • It should almost always be put in dev_dependencies.
  • build_runner contains the logic to run a build and generate code.
    • It should almost always be put in dev_dependencies.

Details

Uses package:args under the covers.

Comments
  • Null safe code generation

    Null safe code generation

    Add support for generating null safe code. Increments the build_cli_annotations and build_cli versions to 2.0.0.

    build_cli uses a path: dependency for build_cli_annotations in it's pubspec. Once build_cli_annotations 2.0.0 is published, this can be fixed and build_cli 2.0.0 can be published.

    There are still some cases where decoding arguments into a non-nullable field throw an exception:

    `type 'Null' is not a subtype of type 'String' in type cast`

    But the same is true in json_serializable. You can see this if you run dart example/example.dart without a --name argument. I'm not sure how to print a better exception here without wrapping every decode statement in something like enumValueHelper...

  • Add nullable annotation for boolean field

    Add nullable annotation for boolean field

    Now, build_cli can't generate code which matched this:

    // file.dart
    import 'package:args/args.dart';

    void main(Iterable<String> args) {
      final parser = new ArgParser()..addFlag('test', defaultsTo: null, negatable: true);
      final results = parser.parse(args);
      print(results['test']);
    }

    dart file.dart
    // null

    I am trying to fix this.

  • [Feature request] Upgrade `source_gen` to version 0.9.0

    [Feature request] Upgrade `source_gen` to version 0.9.0

    • [x] Dart SDK : 2.0.0-dev.69.2 (Mon Jul 23 17:10:56 2018 +0200) on "windows_x64"
    • [x] build_cli : 0.2.4+1

    I'm using packages json_annotation v1.0.0 and json_serializable v1.0.0 to add JSON support to some model classes to a project providing an executable that uses build_cli.

    These packages rely on source_gen v0.9.0 but build_cli rely on v0.8.2. So I can't install the project dependencies :

    $ pub get
    Resolving dependencies...
    Because build_cli >=0.2.4 depends on source_gen ^0.8.2 and json_serializable >=1.0.0 depends on source_gen ^0.9.0, build_cli >=0.2.4 is incompatible with json_serializable >=1.0.0.
    So, because my_app depends on both json_serializable ^1.0.0 and build_cli ^0.2.4, version solving failed.

  • Compare underlying enum types using `getDisplayString`

    Compare underlying enum types using `getDisplayString`

    I'm not sure if this is correct, so I added some TODOs. This is a problem if somehow the display strings are the same, e.g. if two symbols of the same name come from different libraries.

    This fixes the case where an enum is nullable but has a defaultsTo value, where the default value is the non-nullable enum but the field is nullable.

    v3.0.1

    • Added support for caching from GHES 3.5.

    v3.0.0

    • This change adds a minimum runner version(node12 -> node16), which can break users using an out-of-date/fork of the runner. This would be most commonly affecting users on GHES 3.3 or before, as those runners do not support node16 actions and they can use actions from github.com via github connect or manually copying the repo to their GHES instance.

    • Few dependencies and cache action usage examples have also been updated.

    • Use GNU tar on macOS if available #701

    v2.1.3

    • Upgrades @actions/core to v1.2.6 for CVE-2020-15228. This action was not using the affected methods.
    • Fix error handling in uploadChunk where 400-level errors were not being detected and handled correctly

    v2.1.2

    • Adds input to limit the chunk upload size, useful for self-hosted runners with slower upload speeds
    • No-op when executing on GHES

    v2.1.1

    • Update @actions/cache package to v1.0.2 which allows cache action to use posix format when taring files.

    v2.1.0

    • Replaces the http-client with the Azure Storage SDK for NodeJS when downloading cache content from Azure. This should help improve download performance and reliability as the SDK downloads files in 4 MB chunks, which can be parallelized and retried independently
    • Display download progress and speed
